About
Spanky's Card Shop is a trading card game store at 9914 Holmes Rd in Kansas City, Missouri, open since 2012. It carries Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Disney Lorcana, One Piece Card Game and Flesh and Blood, and a 2025 move to a larger, more open room means the shop can now seat 100 players. It suits Magic players in particular, since the calendar leans on prereleases, Commander events and RCQ tournaments.
The store sells sealed product and singles for Magic, Pokémon and Lorcana, with sealed product for One Piece, Flesh and Blood, Final Fantasy and Riftbound as well. Star Wars: Unlimited and other card games are also stocked. Magic sealed covers booster boxes, Commander decks, booster packs, bundles and fat packs, and specialty products, and the singles inventory includes Secret Lair cards. Current Magic releases on the shelves include Star Trek, Reality Fracture and The Hobbit.
Accessories include deck boxes, sleeves from Ultimate Guard, Ultra-Pro and Dragon Shield, playmats and card binders. The store also buys cards from customers who want to sell. The 2025 move added showcases and shelf space for more games, along with a Library Commander Wall built by the shop itself.
Spanky's is a Wizards Play Network Premium store, which makes it an official Magic organized-play location. Events are ticketed in advance, and Magic tickets for Star Trek events ask for a Magic Companion email address at checkout.
| Date | Event | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 6 | Star Trek prerelease, 6 PM to 11:59 PM | $35 |
| Nov 8 | Star Trek Commander Boxing, noon | $135 |
| Nov 14 | $1,000 Pauper Constructed tournament | $40 |
| Nov 15 | Standard RCQ, 10 AM, 2 slots | $40 |
| Dec 12 | Team Trio Tournament | $30 |
Star Trek prerelease sessions are also ticketed for Friday noon, Saturday noon and Sunday noon, and Commander Boxing has a Saturday noon session as well.
Prerelease prizes are paid in booster packs by Swiss record over four rounds: 4-0 earns 8 packs, 3-0-1 earns 6, 3-1 earns 4 and 2-2 earns 1. Commander Boxing works differently. Each player gets a sealed Star Trek booster box, opens it and builds a 100-card Commander deck with no duplicates. Games are casual, with as many as fit in a 5-hour window. Prizes are paid on the first Commander game only, at 4 packs for first, 3 for second, 2 for third and 1 for fourth.
Returns are accepted within 30 days of purchase for unused items in their original packaging with a receipt. Sale items cannot be refunded, only regular priced items. The owners also cancel orders that try to buy out a product or spike prices, a rule they frame as keeping the store a community business.
The shop opened in 2012, and its owners have been around collectible card games for more than 25 years. In 2019 the store was remodeled and became a Wizards Play Network Premium store. The 2025 move put the shop into a bigger, wide-open space with seating for 100.
Several stores sit within a few miles of the shop, among them Gamers Paradise in Prairie Village and PKTC Collectibles in Kansas City, both 3.2 miles away, plus Love of the Games and Hobby Haven in Overland Park and Sports Collectibles in Kansas City. For shows, the All American Collectors Expo is 4.1 miles away and starts its next run on Nov 6. The Johnson County Card Show is 11.2 miles away, with a Halloween Bash edition on Oct 31 and the regular show on Nov 14.
