Comic Boom

Comic Boom is a comic shop and card game store at 22 West Street in Keene, New Hampshire, with Magic: The Gathering at the center of its event calendar. It stocks new comics and back issues, buys and sells Magic cards, and runs organized play for Magic, Disney Lorcana and Flesh and Blood. It suits Magic players looking for a Friday draft, Lorcana players who want a weekend league, and comic readers who want a discounted pull list.

What's on the shelves

The comics side covers major publishers such as Marvel and DC, along with independent publishers including Dark Horse, IDW, Image and Avatar. The store carries trade paperbacks and back issues of virtually every popular comic series.

On the card side, the games carried are Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Disney Lorcana and Flesh and Blood. The store also stocks miniature games, including Heroclix and Warmachine, and the World of Warcraft TCG. It buys and sells Magic cards, old and new, and does the same with toys and video game systems, new and old.

Pull lists and subscriptions

Comic readers can have titles held automatically at 15% off cover price, with bagging and boarding free of charge. Subscriptions carry the same 15% discount and are bagged and boarded. Comics are ordered two months ahead, so a subscription is the surest way to get a full run of a new title, since many comics are never reprinted.

Weekly play

Magic fills much of the rest of the week: constructed Pioneer tournaments run most Saturdays at noon, Modern runs some Saturdays at 6 PM (calling ahead is wise, since that slot shifts around special events), and Sundays at noon bring open-play Commander all day plus a 60-card casual league that runs between set releases.

Lorcana and Flesh and Blood

The Lorcana league runs in 12-week seasons. Each week a player buys in with two packs: one is the player's own and the other goes into the league's prize support. Sunday is a good day to learn the game, and periodic Lorcana events are held then.

Flesh and Blood gets a weekly Armory event, plus release events. The store coordinates its Flesh and Blood scheduling with other stores in the state, so dates sometimes move to let players attend more than one event.

Organized play and prereleases

The store hosts prerelease and launch events for new Magic sets, along with release tournaments. Store championships and other organized play events can change the usual Saturday schedule.

Hours and getting there

The store stays open later on Friday nights for Friday Night Magic and for special events.

Comic Boom is at 22 West Street in Keene and also occupies the adjacent storefront at 18 West Street, which gives it room for events.

History

The store expanded into two adjacent locations in November 2022, which added space for events.
