Brazos Valley Hobby & Games

Brazos Valley Hobby & Games is a tabletop gaming store at 3601 South Texas Avenue in Bryan, Texas, built around play space as much as retail. It carries Warhammer and other miniatures wargames, role-playing games, board games and trading card games, with a calendar that runs seven days a week. It suits miniature painters and wargamers first, and card players who want a table in a room full of hobbyists.

What's on the shelves

Wargaming is the largest category: Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, The Horus Heresy, The Old World, Kill Team and Necromunda, plus Battletech, Bolt Action, Flames of War, the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game and Star Wars: Legion. Paint comes from Citadel, Army Painter, Two Thin Coats, ProAcryl and Tamiya, alongside tools, brushes and basing materials.

On the card side, the store stocks Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and Union Arena, and the weekly calendar also covers One Piece Card Game, Digimon Card Game and Riftbound. Gunpla model kits sit in the same section. Role-playing games are carried too, including Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, with dice sets and accessories.

The store ships anywhere in the United States, with free shipping on orders over $150. Returns are accepted when the item is in its original packaging and a valid receipt can be presented. A store-credit program called Rattler Rewards returns between 1% and 3% on purchases, depending on tier.

Weekly card play

Friday doubles as open play for every game, with monthly Commander challenges that earn Magic players exclusive dice.

The space

The card area has five steel tables, the same build as the wargaming tables, set aside for Commander and other card games. The rest of the floor is what sets the store apart:

• Painting bar: a large counter with tall chairs, plastic mats and overhead lighting, used for Workshop Wednesday and for building kits between games.
• Wargaming tables: 12 industrial steel tables with shelves of fully painted terrain, more than 30 neoprene battle mats, and chess clocks for practicing competitive play.
• RPG rooms: two private rooms with wooden tables, comfortable chairs, bookshelves and a whiteboard for the game master, rented at $10 per hour or $35 for four hours and reservable by phone.
• Lending library: the Rattlers' Den Library holds a collection of wargaming and hobby material.

Wargaming and role-playing events

Miniatures events fill the weekends. Competitive tournaments open registration at 10 AM, start round 1 at 11 AM and typically cost $15 for three rounds. Prizes are paid in store credit: 25% of the pot for first, 20% for second and 15% for third, with community-voted awards for painting and sportsmanship, and 10% of entry fees kept for upkeep of the play space.

Warhammer 40,000 has Rogue Trader tournaments on the first Saturday and first Sunday of each month, with free entry for players in their first three competitive events. A seasonal circuit, the Rumble in the Rattlers' Den, runs on first Sundays from August through April, with a 12-player invitational in May to name the season champion. A narrative series on the third Saturday of each month plays at 1500 points per player.

Casual field days, with no entry fee and no pairings, begin at noon. They are held monthly for Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, Kill Team, The Old World, The Horus Heresy, the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game, Star Wars: Legion, Bolt Action, BLKOUT, Battletech and Trench Crusade, with the day varying by game.

Role-playing nights include a free league on Mondays, Thursdays and the second Saturday of each month, with epic events twice a year. Monday also doubles as an open RPG night for local game masters.

The rest of the week has its own rhythm:

• Workshop Wednesday: bring any hobby project, from miniature painting to terrain making.
• Skirmish Thursday: small-scale wargames.
• Rattler Academy of Miniature Painting: painting instruction every Sunday at 2 PM for a $5 entry, with free miniatures for new painters.

For tournaments, players sign up on the event's registration link before paying the entry fee.
