Seventeen sets ranked by their top Secret Rare: Evolving Skies' Umbreon VMAX alternate art leads the Sword & Shield era at $2,214.79, a little over twice the next set's best, and three of the era's top four come from numbered mainline sets.
Value in the Sword & Shield era is lopsided. Ranked by each set's highest-priced Secret Rare Pokemon card, Evolving Skies' Umbreon VMAX alternate art leads all 17 sets at a TCGplayer market price of $2,214.79 as of September 26, 2026.
The next set's best, Fusion Strike's Gengar VMAX alternate art, traded at $1,026.04 on the same read, so Umbreon priced a little over twice the runner-up. Evolving Skies' own second card, Rayquaza VMAX alternate art at $1,255.44, out-prices every other set's top Secret Rare too.
What follows prices the top Secret Rare from every set on the same basis, ranks them, and shows where this era's money sits: mostly in numbered mainline sets, not in the special releases around them.
TCGplayer market price $2,214.79 as of September 26, 2026, the highest-priced top Secret Rare of any set in the Sword & Shield era.
Sword & Shield era scope and card counts
The Sword & Shield era ran 17 English-language expansions, opening with the Sword & Shield base set on February 7, 2020 and closing with Crown Zenith on January 20, 2023, per Cardboard Alpha's card catalog (sourced from TCGdex, spot-verified live for both boundary sets). It followed the Sun & Moon era, whose final mainline set, Cosmic Eclipse, released November 1, 2019, and was followed by the Scarlet & Violet era, whose first set released March 31, 2023.
Across those 17 sets, the catalog counts 2,755 officially numbered cards and 3,026 total cards once secret rares are included. Against the 16-set Scarlet & Violet era's 2,396 official and 3,414 total cards, Sword & Shield has more officially numbered cards but fewer secret rares above each set's printed count.
Several subsets are tracked as their own catalog sets and sit outside both those counts and the rankings below:
Shining Fates Shiny Vault: 122 cards.
Celebrations Classic Collection: 25 cards.
Trainer Galleries: 30 cards each in Brilliant Stars, Astral Radiance, Lost Origin and Silver Tempest.
Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery: 70 cards.
Top Secret Rare prices, all 17 sets
Every price below is the set's highest-priced card that the catalog rates Secret Rare, limited to Pokemon cards (Trainer and Energy Secret Rares are left out), read from TCGplayer's market price. All 17 reads are dated September 26, 2026. "Alternate Art" marks the four cards TCGplayer lists as Alternate Art Secret.

Four of the 17 top cards are alternate arts, and they take the top three places plus seventh.
The top of the era's price ranking
Umbreon VMAX priced a little over twice Gengar VMAX, the second-highest top Secret Rare, and about 433 times the lowest, Shining Fates' Alcremie VMAX at $5.11.

TCGplayer market price for each set's highest-priced Secret Rare Pokemon card, read September 26, 2026.
The Evolving Skies set page sets Umbreon VMAX against the rest of that set's chase tier, including Rayquaza VMAX alternate art at $1,255.44, the set's second-most valuable card.
Alternate art leads the ranking
The four alternate-art cards in the table sit well apart from the rest:
Umbreon VMAX (Evolving Skies): $2,214.79, first.
Gengar VMAX (Fusion Strike): $1,026.04, second.
Blaziken VMAX (Chilling Reign): $383.40, third.
Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX (Battle Styles): $77.72, seventh, behind three non-alternate-art cards: Charizard V, Pikachu VMAX and Snorlax VMAX.
Champion's Path's Charizard V at $261.70 is the highest non-alternate-art card in the ranking, and the set's Charizard VMAX Secret Rare follows it at $209.97.
Numbered sets vs. special releases
The Sword & Shield era's 17 sets split into three release patterns:
Twelve numbered mainline sets: Sword & Shield through Silver Tempest (swsh1 through swsh12), spaced roughly two to four months apart.
Four special ".5" sets: Champion's Path, Shining Fates, Pokemon GO and Crown Zenith. The first three were slotted between two numbered sets, and Crown Zenith followed the last numbered set, Silver Tempest. Each is smaller in the catalog than the mainline sets around it.
One anniversary special: Celebrations, a 25-card set released October 8, 2021, between Evolving Skies and Fusion Strike.
In this era, Evolving Skies, Fusion Strike and Chilling Reign, all numbered mainline sets, hold the top three places, and Champion's Path is the only special release in the top five.
Ultra Rares above the top Secret Rare
A Secret Rare is not always a set's most valuable card. In five sets, an Ultra Rare alternate full art V card traded above the set's top Secret Rare on the same September 26, 2026 read:
Giratina V (Lost Origin): $844.22, against Giratina VSTAR's $28.76.
Lugia V (Silver Tempest): $519.03, against Lugia VSTAR's $38.95.
Charizard V (Brilliant Stars): $288.07, against Charizard VSTAR's $69.99.
Tyranitar V (Battle Styles): $246.14, against Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX's $77.72.
Machamp V (Astral Radiance): $196.12, against Machamp VMAX's $16.76.
For those five sets, the table above understates where the set's value sits. Giratina V alone would rank third in the era if it were counted alongside the Secret Rares.
Crown Zenith and the Scarlet & Violet handoff
Crown Zenith, released January 20, 2023, was the Sword & Shield era's final set. The Scarlet & Violet era began about ten weeks later, when Scarlet & Violet, its energy set, and its Black Star Promos all released March 31, 2023.
This guide stops at that boundary. Cards from the Sun & Moon era before it and the Scarlet & Violet era after it are not part of the comparison.
What these numbers do and do not show
All prices here are raw, ungraded TCGplayer market prices. Graded prices and grading population counts are not tracked in this guide.
Each figure is one dated read from September 26, 2026, not a price history. Rankings between cards this close in price, such as Butterfree VMAX and Machamp VMAX, can swap on any given day.
What is the Sword & Shield era in the Pokemon TCG?
It is the 17-set run of English-language expansions from the Sword & Shield base set's release on February 7, 2020 through Crown Zenith on January 20, 2023. It followed the Sun & Moon era, whose final mainline set, Cosmic Eclipse, released November 1, 2019, and it was succeeded by the Scarlet & Violet era starting March 31, 2023.
Which Sword & Shield era set has the most valuable Secret Rare?
Evolving Skies. Its Umbreon VMAX alternate art traded at a TCGplayer market price of $2,214.79 as of September 26, 2026, the highest top Secret Rare across all 17 sets in this comparison. That is a little over twice Fusion Strike's Gengar VMAX alternate art at $1,026.04, the era's second-highest.
Why does Champion's Path rank so high for a small special set?
Its top Secret Rare, Charizard V, traded at $261.70 as of September 26, 2026, the era's fourth-highest in this comparison, and its Charizard VMAX Secret Rare followed at $209.97. It is the only special release in the era's top four. This guide reports TCGplayer's market price and does not attribute a cause for the premium.
Are Champion's Path and Shining Fates full sets or special releases?
Special releases. Both were slotted between two numbered mainline sets rather than replacing one, and both are much smaller than the mainline sets around them. Champion's Path carries 80 total cards and Shining Fates' main set carries 73, not counting its 122-card Shiny Vault subset, against mainline sets that mostly run past 200.
Does this guide cover graded card prices?
No. Every price in this guide is a raw, ungraded TCGplayer market price. Graded prices and grading population data are not tracked in this guide, so no PSA, CGC, BGS or other graded figure appears in it.
Why isn't Giratina V alternate art in the main table?
The main table compares each set's top Secret Rare, and Giratina V alternate art is an Ultra Rare. At $844.22 as of September 26, 2026 it is Lost Origin's most valuable card, which is why the guide lists it separately with the other Ultra Rare alternate arts that out-price their set's top Secret Rare.

Rochelle works in sales as an account executive serving escrow and mortgage teams, a field where a price means little without comparable sales behind it, and brings that comps-first instinct to cards: what individual cards are worth, how whole sets and eras have held their value, and how a card's sold history differs from what sellers are currently asking. Each guide is built from published pricing and population data first, cites every source inline, and is fact-checked against those sources before it is published.
