Wild Growth Games

Wild Growth Games is a card store at 820 Main St in Highland, Illinois, stocked for Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Disney Lorcana and Riftbound players, with One Piece Card Game carried as well. It sells sealed product and singles, buys cards from customers, and runs a calendar of prereleases and release tournaments that reaches well beyond the big-name games. It suits local players who want a small-shop atmosphere and a steady run of special events, and shoppers who prefer to browse in person, since the store does not ship at this time.

What's on the shelves

Pokémon is the deepest part of the inventory: sealed product plus a singles case that ranges from everyday cards to high-end pieces, including full-art and modern chase cards priced in the hundreds of dollars. Magic: The Gathering is stocked in both sealed product and singles, and the Magic singles run up to rare Commander staples and older cards at four-figure prices. Disney Lorcana has sealed product and singles, and Riftbound has singles. Accessories are stocked too, and gift cards are available.

The store buys cards as well as selling them, and preorders are taken for upcoming releases. Online ordering is currently unavailable, so the store's catalog works as a way to see what is in stock before coming in.

Events and prereleases

The store's special-event calendar is busy and covers a wide spread of games, including Pokémon, Magic, Riftbound, Palworld, UniVersus and Gundam. No recurring weekly events are scheduled right now, so the draw is the release-driven calendar.

A Pokémon November Challenge is also on the calendar in early November.

The Magic prerelease is the event with the most detail. It is a three-round, best-of-three event capped at 30 players. The $40 entry includes a prerelease kit with six packs and a set-themed spindown die. Prizes are paid in packs: a 3-0 record earns seven, a 2-1 record earns three, and every other player gets one.

Hours and getting there

The store is open three days a week.

It is closed Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, so plan around the Friday and Saturday window if you want to catch a weekend event.

The shop is at 820 Main Street, Highland, IL 62249.
