Walt's Cards and Games

Walt's Cards and Games is a card and tabletop game store at 7620 German Hill Rd in Dundalk, Maryland. It is a Konami Official Tournament Store, so Yu-Gi-Oh! is the center of its calendar, with weekend tournaments and sneak peek events for new sets. It also carries Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and Star Wars: Unlimited, along with board games and role-playing games, which makes it a fit for players who want more than one game under a single roof.

What's on the shelves

Card games are the core of the stock: Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Star Wars: Unlimited and Fluxx, among others. The store has sold Yu-Gi-Oh! decks, including the Legendary Dragon Deck and the Link Strike decks at $9.99, and has carried Magic sets as they release, with both decks and singles, such as the Hour of Devastation set from the Amonkhet block.

Board games include the Neapolitan and Civil War series. The role-playing shelf covers Dungeons & Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, Rune Quest, Shadowrun, Star Wars and Doctor Who.

Weekly play

Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments run on both weekend days. The store's schedule has also paired Sunday with Dungeons & Dragons and Saturday with HeroClix, and Tanks, a miniature game, has been played on Tuesdays at 5 PM, where newcomers can learn the game or compete.

Tournaments follow the official rules of Wizards of the Coast and Konami, and players should bring a COSSY or DCI number.

Organized play and special events

As a Konami Official Tournament Store, the shop runs sneak peek tournaments when new Yu-Gi-Oh! sets arrive. These have run on weekends at $20 entry, with five packs of the new set and the Konami promo cards included, and players get a chance to dice off for the prerelease play mat. The sneak peeks are all-day events that begin when the store opens, and the regular weekend tournaments are held alongside them for a more organized event.

The store has also hosted a VIP tournament feeding into a Yu-Gi-Oh! YCS event in Atlanta. Entry was $12, the format was Advanced with Swiss pairings, and the winner received a unique game mat and a two-round bye at the YCS.

Conventions

Beyond the shop, the owners have taken a table at regional conventions, including CapClave in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Honor Con in Raleigh, MACE in Charlotte, and Chessie Con in Towson, Maryland.

The store is open five days a week, closed Wednesday and Thursday, and keeps a late close on Fridays.
