Top Cut Comics

Top Cut Comics is a comics, collectibles and gaming store at 2430 S Alpine Rd in Rockford, Illinois, with a trading card game section that covers most of the major games. It suits players who want a wide spread of card games under one roof, collectors who also buy comics, manga and model kits, and anyone with a stack of singles or bulk to sell.

What's on the shelves

The card side is broad. The store carries Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece Card Game, Disney Lorcana, Flesh and Blood, Digimon Card Game, Star Wars: Unlimited, Dragon Ball Super Card Game, Weiss Schwarz and sports cards. Sealed product includes booster boxes, booster packs, commander decks, bundles, tins and box sets, and the store also stocks singles for Magic, Pokémon and Lorcana. Supplies cover binders, deck boxes, sleeves, grading supplies and playmats.

Beyond cards, the store sells comic books (including graded books and Golden Age and Silver Age titles), graphic novels, manga, novels, board games, puzzles, role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, dice, miniatures, Gunpla and other model kits, Funko figures, LEGO, plush and Pop Mart blind boxes.

Selling cards and comics

The store runs a buy counter for singles, bulk and comic books. It buys Pokémon, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon, One Piece, Lorcana and Dragon Ball cards, and choosing store credit instead of cash pays 20 percent more. Cards must be de-sleeved before they are sold. Sellers outside the area can ship their cards in.

Bulk is bought at posted per-card rates:

Foil Magic cards pay more at each rarity, and unsorted Pokémon bulk of any rarity except basic energy is bought at $0.003 a card.

Coins, dice and basic energy are not being bought at this time. The buy counter keeps shorter hours than the store: noon to 6:30 PM Sunday through Thursday and noon to 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Events and learning to play

The store runs weekly tournaments and scheduled tournaments, along with prereleases for Magic, One Piece and Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! sneak peek events. Demo days, a family board game night and Lorcana, Dungeons & Dragons and Pokémon events round out the calendar.

Newcomers to Pokémon have a dedicated on-ramp in Learn to Play. Kids, teens and adults are welcome, though a basic reading level is recommended so children can read the cards. The free Trainer Tier gives a Pokémon promo card on every visit, and first-time attendees pick a 60-card deck to keep. The Master Tier costs $12 and adds three booster packs and one GX or V Pokémon, along with the Trainer Tier perks. Other prizes and giveaways are added each week.

The game room can also be reserved for private events.

Store policies

Items ordered ahead can be picked up in store. Online orders carry a 30-day return policy, with items needing to come back in the condition they were received, in original packaging and with proof of purchase. Sale items and gift cards cannot be returned.
