Star City Games

Star City Games is a trading card game retailer and event organizer at 5728 Williamson Rd in Roanoke. It began in 1993 as a small comic book and hobby game shop and has grown into a 25,000 square foot operation, which suits collectors and players who want deep Magic: The Gathering stock and a broader spread of other card games under one roof.

What's on the shelves

Magic: The Gathering is the center of the inventory, with millions of singles in stock. Singles and sealed product are also carried for Flesh and Blood and Disney Lorcana, and Pokémon is among the games the store handles. Sealed product extends to Vibes, Star Wars: Unlimited, Bo Jackson Battle Arena and Wonders of The First. Beyond cards, the store offers a wide selection of gaming supplies, including sleeves, deck boxes and playmats, along with thousands of unique specialty items.

Selling your cards

The store buys cards for Magic: The Gathering, Riftbound, Disney Lorcana and Flesh and Blood. Sellers who can't make it in can mail their cards through a Ship + Sell program: you tell the store how many cards you have, send them in, and the store looks them over and makes an offer. Accepting the offer means payment by check, PayPal or store credit.

SCG CON and organized events

Star City Games also runs SCG CON, a three-day trading card game convention held in cities across the country. Each one celebrates Magic: The Gathering, Flesh and Blood, Star Wars: Unlimited, Disney Lorcana and Vibes, headlined by multiple main events with cash prizes, plus casual and competitive side events and appearances by special guests and artists.

Hours and getting there

The store is open Tuesday through Sunday, though hours may vary from day to day. The address is 5728 Williamson Rd NW, Roanoke, VA 24012.

History

Pete Hoefling opened the original 800 square foot comic book and hobby game store in 1993 with his parents. The business now operates from a 25,000 square foot facility less than a mile from that first location, a thirty-fold increase in floor space.

The local scene

Several other shops sit close by. Game Junkies is 0.2 miles away, and Ricks Hobby Shop has locations 0.4 and 0.6 miles away. The Collector's Lair - Roanoke North is also 0.4 miles off, and Infinity comics is 1.1 miles away, all in Roanoke. That makes the area an easy one to browse on foot or by a short drive.
