Spro's Comics

Spro's Comics is a vintage comic book dealer in Ventura, California, that also takes in Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards and vintage toys. It operates by appointment only from a suite at 5450 Telegraph Rd, which makes it a different kind of stop from a walk-in game store. It suits people with a collection to sell or a specific vintage book in mind more than players looking for a table.

What the store buys and sells

The core of the business is vintage comics. Books from the 1930s through the 1980s are the specialty, and the sweet spot is comics with an original cover price between 10 cents and $1. Modern books are welcome too, though the store gets choosier with comics from the 1990s to the present.

Trading cards sit alongside the comics. The store handles Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards, and vintage toys are part of the mix as well. Sellers are invited to bring whatever they have for a look.

How buying and selling works

Pricing for incoming collections and for current stock draws on the Overstreet Price Guide, GPA and GoCollect. The Overstreet guide is released annually, while the other two track recent sales data daily from popular resale and auction outlets, so the pricing follows current market movement rather than peak-era numbers.

Every offer to a seller is a cash offer. Buyers can pay with nearly any form of payment. The guiding idea is that collectors should be rewarded when it is time to move a collection, and that buyers should not pay more than the market dictates, with the store acting as a middleman.

Sellers have two options: make an appointment and bring books to the office, or have the store come to them. Anyone in California or a neighboring state can send a photo or video of what they have and work from there, and sellers farther out are encouraged to reach out anyway. Books for sale online are coming soon, and the store runs monthly live sales in the meantime.

Visiting

There are no walk-in hours and no weekly events or organized play programs, so a visit means scheduling a time first.

The owner's story

The store grew out of a long, on-and-off collecting habit that became permanent after the hobby boom of 2021. As the market corrected, the owner noticed that many buyers kept pointing to peak sales data when buying a collector's books, then ignored it when selling. That frustration shaped the store's approach of pricing from recent sales and treating sellers fairly.

Comics and coffee

The store also produces a comics and coffee blog and a podcast called The Comic Room Pod. Episodes are collector-focused, such as a recent installment on favorite comic covers from the store's own collection.
