Space Cadets Collection Collection

Space Cadets Collection Collection is a family-friendly comic and collectibles shop in Shenandoah, Texas, that also carries Pokémon alongside a broad run of toys and plush. It has been open since 2010, sits in a shopping center on Robinson Rd, and suits comic readers, toy collectors and families looking for a store with a dedicated kids section.

What's on the shelves

Comics are the core of the store. The floor carries the latest new releases and trade paperbacks, and the back-issue stock runs to roughly 28,000 comics, most priced at cover price. A separate wall holds pricier books, including older comics from the early decades of the medium. Anything currently available through the store's distributor can be ordered, by stopping in or calling.

Toys and collectibles fill much of the rest. Toy lines include Star Wars, Star Trek, GI Joe, Super Mario Brothers, Halo, Minecraft, Marvel, DC, Funko, Gundam, Lego, Batman, Superman, Spiderman and Transformers. Collectible figures come from Neca, Mattel, Hasbro, Tomy, Spinmaster and Funko, among others. Pokémon is the one trading card game the store carries, and Pokémon also appears among its toy lines. Plush toys are part of the mix too.

A kids area focuses on comics and graphic novels for younger readers.

Pull boxes, layaway and consignment

The store runs a pull box subscription so regulars get the books they want as they come out. Subscribers get free bags and boards and 10% off every comic on their pull list.

Layaway is simple: put 25% down, which is non-refundable, and there are 2 months to pay off the items. That lets a buyer secure a pricey collectible and pay across several paychecks.

The consignment program is built for people who have comics or collectibles to sell but not the time to sell them. A seller brings items in to be looked over, and staff explain what the store is currently taking. After a consignment account is opened, each item is valued against current market value and sold online, in live sales, or on the sales floor, with the store handling the pricing, sorting, organizing, photographing and listing. When an item sells, half the value goes to the consignor's account and half to the store, which pays the listing fees out of its own portion. Consignors can collect a check twice a month, have earnings deposited into a PayPal account, or leave the balance in the system to spend in the shop. More than 900 consignors from 5 states use the program.

Selling beyond the counter

The store also sells online through Amazon and other stores, with the option of in-store pickup or shipping. Regular live sales run on the Comic Book Shopping Network, a way for the stock to reach buyers who cannot make it in.

Events and reputation

The store hosts Cadets Con, a convention held inside the shop every year. It also sets up at conventions elsewhere. Over the years it has produced 12 store variants and exclusives, many of them supporting specific charities. Jim Lee is among the big names who have done signings and store appearances there since the doors opened in 2010, and the shop is a multiple-time Eisner Spirit of Retail nominee.

The store is at 27326 Robinson Rd #117, Shenandoah, in the same shopping center as Flips Gymnastics and Alliance Fencing Academy, about half a mile down Robinson Road from the Woodlands Parkway turn in Oak Ridge North.
