Quality Games TX

Quality Games TX is a Houston games shop on West 21st Street that is built around chess first and cards second. It has been open since 2009 and runs as an owner-managed boutique, so the shelves lean toward chess sets, backgammon, dominoes and other classic tabletop games, with Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering product sitting alongside them. It suits a shopper who wants a good chess board and a few booster packs from the same stop, more than a player looking for a nightly tournament room.

What's on the shelves

Chess is the core of the stock. The range covers tournament sets, travel and folding magnetic sets, glass and marble sets, giant garden chess, chess computers and electronic boards, plus clocks, bags, books and scorebooks. Backgammon sets run from affordable designer boards to luxury editions, and the games section also covers go, dominoes, mah-jongg, cribbage boards, poker supplies, checkers and puzzles. Family favorites such as Scrabble and Monopoly appear in several editions.

On the card side, the store sells collectible card game booster packs for Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering. Pokémon Mega Evolution Perfect Order single booster packs are $9. Magic: The Gathering Lorwyn Eclipsed product ranges from $9.50 to $57.00, which spans individual packs up to larger sealed product. The card selection is a small part of a shop with a much larger catalog of tabletop games, so it is better treated as a place to pick up new releases than as a source for deep singles stock.

Store policies

Orders over $100 get 10% off with a coupon code, and the store ships online orders, which suits its catalog of heavy, bulky items like garden chess sets and large boards. Some items sell out, so stock on any given product varies.

Hours and getting there

The store is at 1024 W 21st St, Houston. It is open daily, with a shorter day on Sunday.

History

Quality Games TX opened in 2009 and has kept a loyal customer base since, growing largely by word of mouth. It has long been known as a retailer for chess products, and the broader classic-games range grew around that specialty.
