Oiltown Comics

Oiltown Comics is a comic and game shop at 520 W 1st Ave in Corsicana, Texas, that opened in October 2016. It sells comics, manga, graphic novels, toys, statues, tabletop role-playing games and supplies, kids books and T-shirts, with the Digimon Card Game as its trading card line. The store runs as a family-friendly shop for customers of all ages, which makes it a fit for parents and kids as much as for longtime comic readers.

What's on the shelves

Comics are the core of the store, and the range is wide: new Marvel, DC and independent releases alongside back-issue runs, graphic novels in softcover and hardcover, and manga. Kids books and licensed graphic novels, including Lego City and Lego Ninjago titles, sit next to the adult material. Beyond print, the store carries action figures, Funko Pops, plushies, model kits, statues, dice, board games, role-playing games and miniatures, and game supplies such as card sleeves.

On the card side, the store carries the Digimon Card Game and stocks boosters such as the Digimon CG Ex-13 Chivalrous XIII Booster at $4.99. Collectible card games are a category in the store's catalog, and sleeves for other games appear in the supply range, including Star Wars: Unlimited sleeves.

Store policies

Customers can sign up for weekly comic subscriptions. Subscriptions not picked up within 30 days of release go back into stock unless prepayment or other arrangements have been made.

Online orders can be picked up in the store with no shipping or handling charge. Cancellations have to come in before an order ships, and once an item has shipped there are no refunds or exchanges. Orders take one to three days to process.

A rewards program covers all customers: every $1 spent earns 1 point, and 100 points earn a $5 voucher to use at checkout.

Hours and getting there

The store is closed Monday and Tuesday and keeps shorter afternoon hours midweek before opening longer through the weekend.

History

The shop occupies the building long remembered locally as Thurston Auto Parts. The building went up in 1924 as a grocery store. The Thurston family bought the property in the 1940s, expanded it and ran an auto parts retail business there for more than 60 years. The owners opened the comic shop in October 2016 after moving back to Corsicana, with the aim of bringing a comic retail environment to Navarro County and the surrounding communities.

The name nods to both pieces of that past: the auto business that ran in the building, and Corsicana's standing as the site of the first commercial oil well.
