Halcyon Games

Halcyon Games is a retail game store and event space at 2040 Louetta Rd in Spring, Texas, in North Houston. It leans toward board, card and roleplaying games, with a nautical theme throughout: a shiplap wall with three portholes separates the shop from the play space. It suits trading card players who want a dedicated table to play at, collectors who sell singles, and groups that want a private room for game night.

What's on the shelves

The card side covers Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Disney Lorcana and Flesh and Blood, alongside sleeves, binders and binder pages, deck boxes and counters. The rest of the shop is broad. Board games include new releases, expansions and Kickstarter titles, with sleeves and token holders to match. Roleplaying books for games like Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer sit next to dice, miniatures and spell cards, and gamer novelty items turn over weekly.

Magic and Pokémon singles are browsed in the store, and they typically sell at the going market price adjusted for condition. The store reserves the right to set a different price when the market price is thrown off by low sales volume, banned and restricted announcements or reprints. Special orders can be placed for nearly any product the store does not stock, and some product releases are sold in the store only.

A Reward Member program returns 5% store credit on every purchase.

Selling singles and collections

The store buys Magic and Pokémon singles. For singles over $5 in value, the offer is 60% of the market price, adjusted for condition, in store credit. Cash offers are available on a limited basis at about 40% of the market price for the same singles. Offers are firm once the cards are examined, and a seller is free to accept or decline. The store may limit purchases based on what it already has on hand.

How you sell depends on the quantity:

Collection evaluations are done Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 8 PM, and appointments can be made by phone.

The play space

The play space is separated from the retail floor and seats 32 across four tables in 750 square feet. Events run every evening during the week and several more on weekends, each hosted by a crew member who keeps things moving, answers questions and teaches the game. Event guests get Wi-Fi, and every table has surge protectors, with cell charging blocks and cables on hand.

Other details make a long session easier:

• A hot and cold water dispenser, cups, and drink and snack vending are in the play space, and outside food is welcome.
• A sink and paper towels are in the play space.
• A player-donated bulk cabinet holds Magic lands and Pokémon energy.
• A board game library is always open, with new titles added often, and games can be tried in the store before buying.
• There are two gender neutral restrooms, one with child fixtures and a changing table and one wheelchair accessible. Both are stocked with toiletries.

An event loyalty program lets players earn doubloons with event seat purchases and spend them on store merchandise.

The private room

A separate room for up to eight players is fully walled off with sound-dampened walls and its own door. It has a mini fridge, dimmable lighting on nautical fixtures, and two Dragon Shield vinyl wallpapers. It rents in morning and evening sessions, weekly renters get their time slot reserved, and loyalty program members earn 8 doubloons with each rental.

Store policies

Returns and exchanges are accepted with a valid receipt for 30 days after purchase, for the original price on the original payment method or as store credit. Without a receipt, returns are for store credit only and at the store's discretion. Items must be unopened and in original condition, and individual trading cards, clearance items, snacks and open items cannot be returned. Returns of special orders, preorders, prerelease kits, promotional items and limited edition items may be limited.

Orders ship by UPS, USPS or FedEx, with shipping charged at checkout by weight, and items go out within one business day of the order.
