Four Color Comics

Four Color Comics is a Scarsdale, New York dealer in comic books, movie posters and other pop-culture collectibles, and it sells exclusively online rather than from a walk-in shop. The address on Locust Ave is not a storefront: visits are by arrangement, not by dropping in. It suits collectors hunting for graded vintage comics, classic monster-movie memorabilia and film posters, and anyone who wants to buy or request a specific book without leaving home.

What's on the shelves

The catalog runs well beyond ordinary back issues. Categories include comics, certified comics, posters, comic art, pulps, Big Little Books, comic lots and runs, coverless books, fanzines and guides, statues, magazines, memorabilia, reference books, toys and games, and trading cards.

The current stock leans toward classic horror and monster material: Universal-era film items such as Son of Kong, The Mummy's Tomb, Son of Frankenstein and Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, bronze busts of the Mummy, the Monster of Frankenstein and the Bride and the Monster, and comics such as House of Mystery and Creature from the Black Lagoon. Superhero and mainstream titles turn up too, including Superboy, Wonder Woman, Shazam and Star Wars, along with Donald Duck, Porky Pig and Archie's Giant Christmas Stocking. Prices span a wide range, from under $10 for a modern-era comic to several thousand dollars for rare film pieces and bronze statues, with the top of the current inventory in the five-figure range.

Grading and authenticity

Certified books are slabbed by CGC, the only third-party grading company the store uses. Slabbing encases the comic in a hard plastic case after it has been graded, which protects it from most damage and fixes its grade. The owner has been collecting since childhood and has sold comics for more than 20 years, and is a known dealer in the movie poster world and a LAMP dealer.

Store policies

Returns are accepted within 10 days, but only on certain items. Uncertified comic books, original artwork and toys are refundable. CGC comic books, lots and runs, posters, trading cards and time payment items are not. Returns must go back in the same packaging the item shipped in, buyers cover any insurance or confirmation cost they want, and a refund or credit follows once the merchandise is inspected and found in the condition it was sent.

Other policies worth knowing:

• Orders can be changed if the buyer gets in touch quickly, ideally within 24 hours, and not at all once the merchandise ships.
• Orders are taken online, by phone, by fax, by email or by mail.
• Checks and money orders are accepted, though a check must clear the bank before anything ships.
• Gift certificates never expire, can be used on any merchandise order and cannot be exchanged for cash.
• Shipping charges vary with the size and weight of the package. A temporary fixed rate shows at checkout until the exact amount is determined, and that placeholder is not charged.
• Registered customers can use a want list to request a book that is not in inventory, and the store makes contact when it comes in.
• There are no printed catalogs.
