Comic Store West

Comic Store West is a comic book and game store at 2111 Industrial Highway in York, Pennsylvania, and the oldest and largest of its kind in Central PA. It opened in 1986 and now fills 5,000 square feet. Comics are the core of the business, with card and tabletop games alongside, which makes it a fit for Pokémon players, miniatures and RPG groups, and anyone who wants a long-running shop where games are played every day.

What's on the shelves

The store carries comics from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Image, plus a wide spread of games: Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, HeroClix, Dungeons and Dragons, Battletech, Pathfinder, Star Wars X-Wing, Imperial Assault, Dice Masters, WarMachine and Hordes, WarHammer and 40K. Graphic novels, including a large manga selection, are part of the stock as well.

A free comic subscription service lets customers reserve titles in a pull box held under their last name. There is no deposit and no minimum number of titles. New releases on a pull list are held for up to 30 days, other comics for up to 7 days, and longer holds can be arranged. Anyone with a subscription account gets 10% off all purchases, not just comics. Gift cards come in $25, $50 and $100 amounts.

Games and organized play

Games are hosted at the store daily, and the store runs a Pokémon League as its confirmed organized-play program. Dedicated player groups exist for Pokémon, Magic, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, HeroClix, Star Wars, 40K and board games.

Schools and libraries

The store runs a program for schools and libraries. Graphic novels are discounted, generally 20% to 30% off cover price or more, with free delivery to York, Lancaster, Harrisburg and southern York County. Staff will make free in-class visits to talk about comics as a medium and the careers behind them, and a game demo team can bring most of the games the store sells to a school or library for a Game Day. Materials can be returned for any reason.

Conventions

The store is the home of Four State Comic Con. Its convention schedule runs through the year: WildCon in January, Happy Valley Comic Con in February, Four State Comic Con in April and Harrisburg Comic and Pop Con in August.

History

The shop opened in 1986 and has grown over the decades into its current 5,000 square feet. A grand reopening took place in 2007, and the store has hosted events from Free Comic Book Day and Local Comic Shop Day to a 24-hour Extra Life gaming marathon and a National Night Out appearance.
