Comic Book University

Comic Book University is a comic and games store on the south side of Indianapolis, at 7623 Shelby St. It has been open since 2005 and works out of a roughly 4800 square foot space with three gaming rooms, which makes it a practical stop for Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon players who want room to sit down and play as well as a place to pick up comics and cards.

What's on the shelves

The store sells comic books, board games, trading card games, action figures and an assortment of pop culture items. A large selection of graphic novels sits alongside the comics. On the card side, the games carried are Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon. Curbside pickup and mail order have been offered for customers who prefer not to shop in person.

Weekly play

The gaming rooms are set up to hold several events at once, and the store has used them for Magic: The Gathering, HeroClix and Pokémon. The Monday tournament is a Standard format event with a maximum of three rounds, and players have received one booster pack per round win. The Saturday night is built around Commander, the casual multiplayer format, so players bring their own decks.

Both events fall well inside opening hours, so neither requires a late exit before closing.

Other events

Saturday afternoons have also carried a Magic booster draft, with booster packs awarded based on attendance and a $15 entry. It was an occasional event rather than a fixed weekly one, so players interested in drafting should confirm before making the trip.

The store is at 7623 Shelby St, Indianapolis, IN 46227. It is open longer on weekdays and Saturday than on Sunday.

History

Comic Book University opened in 2005 and has stayed on the south side of Indianapolis since. During the pandemic it kept curbside pickup and mail order running and asked customers who were not vaccinated to wear masks in the store.

The local scene

The south side has a cluster of game and comic shops within about a mile. Mage's Comics and Games shares the immediate area, and Grandmaster Games is about 0.3 miles away. Raven's Comics, Collectibles and Books and Raven's Collectibles are in Southport, about 0.9 miles out, and Game Preserve is about a mile away.

Card shows are within reach as well. The Indy Sports Card Show is about 4.4 miles away and next starts on November 7, 2026. Collectors Palooza 2026 is about 11.8 miles away and begins November 15, the same day as the Lebanon, IN Card Show, about 30.4 miles out. The Crawfordsville Card Show, about 48.2 miles away, starts November 14.
