Pichu, Butterfree and Alakazam head the card list of the Japanese Base Expansion Pack, an expansion from the e-Card era that released on December 1, 2001. It carries 131 catalog printings and reuses the Kanto roster, with Alakazam, Mewtwo and Venusaur each printed three times and Ampharos and Arbok twice. The mix of Johto and Kanto names gives the expansion a transitional feel. Its rarity spread is even, with Holo Rare, Common, Rare and Uncommon cards in close to equal numbers.
Base Expansion Pack was released December 1, 2001.
Base Expansion Pack has 131 cards.
Base Expansion Pack is part of the e-Card era.

The pull structure of Base Expansion Pack is flat: Holo Rares are the largest group at 35 cards, level with the Commons, Rares and Uncommons, and no tier is flagged as a separate chase class. The most valuable cards are Pichu, Butterfree and Alakazam, all Holo Rares, followed by Charizard and Ninetales, also Holo Rares. Dragonite and Mew sit just below them as plain Rares. Value is spread thinly for a set with famous names, since the top five cards hold 28 percent of the total card value.
As of October 2026, Base Expansion Pack ranks 2nd by total card value among the 7 comparable e-Card sets and 4th across the 189 sets in the Japanese Pokémon TCG, at about 1.3 times the era median. Its single most valuable card ranks 3rd in the era, and it ranks 2nd for trading activity. It followed Pokemon Web, which holds less total value, and came before The Town on No Map, which also holds less. Its cards reached English as Expedition Base Set on September 15, 2002, 9 months later, with 124 cards shared.

Completing the Japanese Base Expansion Pack means chasing 131 catalog printings, of which 108 are priced. Because the top five cards account for only 28 percent of total card value, the cost of a complete set is spread across many mid-value Holo Rares and Rares rather than a few cards. Expect the Holo Rare group, 35 cards deep, to shape the bulk of the effort.
